ACCOUNTANT
Position Summary

The Contemporary Jewish Museum (The CJM) seeks an energetic, flexible, creative, and results-oriented Accountant to be an integral member of The Museum’s Finance team, and who can apply their technical skills and accounting experience to meet the needs of this dynamic Museum.

Reporting to the Controller, the Accountant prepares journal entries, administers and processes AP, Revenue & AR, and other general ledger accounting, and maintains fixed asset schedules. In addition, the Accountant will work closely with the Finance and Development teams to prepare timely and accurate sub-ledger reconciliations and financial reports for internal and external purposes. The Accountant will be expected to interact collaboratively and productively, providing the highest level of customer service with all staff members of The CJM and outside vendors. 

The ideal candidate for this role brings experience in public accounting and/or non-profit accounting, and an eagerness to initiate new and efficient processes to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. The candidate must be familiar with GAAP and have a strong understanding of the monthly financial close process. The successful individual in the Accountant role will take strong ownership of their work, while also being collaborative, resourceful, and results-oriented.

Position Title: Accountant
Department: Finance
Reports To: Controller
Status: Regular, Full-Time, Exempt
Pay Range: $65,000–$75,000 annual
Location: On-site at The Museum, with remote work possible

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Administer all Accounts Payable transactions, ensuring that invoices and other payment requests are paid accurately and in accordance with The CJM’s finance policies and procedures
  • Prepare monthly general journal entries including, but not limited to: cash receipts, bank transactions, and other balance sheet transactions
  • Research, track, and resolve accounting subledger reconciliation issues
  • Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules
  • Support the efficient, timely, and accurate monthly accounting close
  • Produce ad-hoc financial reports as assigned by the Controller
  • Assist in developing and documenting finance policies and procedures
  • Work closely with the Controller in support of The CJM’s annual external financial audit and 990 tax returns, including PBC preparation and year-end close reconciliations
  • Contribute to a highly collaborative and service-oriented finance function that is supportive of, and well-integrated with, other programmatic staff teams
  • Conduct all interactions with colleagues, the Board of Trustees, and external parties with the highest degree of integrity
  • Occasionally provide back-up support for Payroll Processing
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration; with some combination of CPA, Audit, and/or nonprofit experience
  • Minimum four years accounting and/or finance experience with history of growth and increasing levels of responsibility
  • Exceptional Excel skills and strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Comfortable and experienced with robust accounting software
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of The CJM

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with GAAP financial reporting
  • Fund accounting a plus
  • A clear communicator with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Capable of managing difficult situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to perform detailed tasks accurately and to meet deadlines

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a keyboard and computer
  • No lifting/moving objects involved
