Amy Zimmerman, z”l, brought so much sunshine to our community here at The Contemporary Jewish Museum (The CJM). Whether she was greeting Members at an exhibition opening or dropping by a colleague’s desk after a long weekend, it was always with a bright, welcoming smile and a kind word. Amy was gentle, grounded, and deeply caring. Her passion for building and sustaining this very special community inspired us each and every day, and we will miss her immensely.
For many of us, it is impossible to imagine The CJM without Amy. After all, she was a part of The Museum since the begining. In 2006, she arrived from SFMOMA with an expertise for museum membership and an enthusiasm to launch The CJM in its new home on Jessie Square. Amy was integral to The Museum from those first days; always a connector, she reached out to existing Members, cultivated new Members, and created new lines of communication with donors and Trustees. Amy brought together her New York and West Coast sensibilities in her approach at The CJM. She brought an extension of her family warmth, and a true spirit of welcoming and belonging to everyone she encountered. With her understanding of The Museum as a gathering place, she created community connections, including the very popular Art, Kibbitz, and Coffee tours. Amy loved getting to know each person, to find conversation and commonality, and to seed opportunities for participants to find connections with each other. Whether in the warmth of her written communications, the kind voice at the other end of calls to The Museum, or a friendly face encountered at an exhibition opening or event, Amy loved working with each of our Members. She generously shared her warmth and love for The CJM and for San Francisco with everyone who knew her.
We treasure having known Amy. Our hearts go out to all of those whose lives she touched, and most of all, to her family. Amy’s beautiful spirit lives within our Museum, always. May her memory be a blessing.
