This teacher resource guide helps students rethink traditional concepts of portraiture, identity, and representation. It is a tool to support an inclusive classroom environment and to complement teaching anti-bullying, diversity, gender expansiveness, and race as a social construct.
Using contemporary portraiture to explore identity, this guide includes works of art from artists of color, women, LGBTQ+ artists, gender non-binary artists, and those who defy classification altogether—all of whom are featured in Show Me As I Want To Be Seen, on view Feb 7–Jul 7, 2019.
Included in the resource are: an introduction, guiding questions for viewing, 10 selected images from the exhibition, artists’ biographies and statements, suggested hands-on activities for students, and tips for a concluding discussion.
Show Me as I Want to Be Seen is organized by The Contemporary Jewish Museum and curated by Natasha Matteson, Assistant Curator.
