Teens participating in the Teen Art Connect (TAC) programs at The CJM learn how art can be used to explore and celebrate identity. These zines, created by 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 Anti-bias Leaders Fellows, were shared by Fellows in their schools and libraries, and showcase the power of teen voices and creative expression.
From the author:
“As a gender queer person, I believe that nonbinary / trans voices and experiences deserve to be amplified. We urgently need more representation. Therefore, I created this zine that consists of quotes from interviews I conducted with NB individuals, my drawings of them, and poems I have written that reflect my trans identity. The goal of this project is to educate people about the nonbinary experience, and to promote advocacy for trans rights.”

From the author:
"There is a significant value in understanding the concept of identity and what that entails in contemporary society. Acknowledging our multifaceted identities allows us to understand how it plays a role in determining our experience and understanding of the world. With that, identity is a concept far more emphasized in youth. We have come to a new age of individuals who manifest individuality and embrace self-expression. This zine is a small, but interesting portrayal of identity and what that could look like in a diverse and expressive generation of youth.”

From the author:
“Over my two years as a student at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts (SOTA), the differences between Academy High School and my own high school, SOTA, have become even more apparent. SOTA is a school that requires an audition/portfolio to be accepted with a total of approximately 800 students and 50% of the school is white. Academy high school is primarily black and brown people of color and is approximately 200 students large. They are both public high schools within the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) that share the same campus….There are many differences between the two schools, but in this project, I wanted to shine a light on the amazing people from both schools. To illuminate a glow into celebrating the two schools and the fantastic people from both. As they both coexist day in and day out next to one another and bring their own qualities to made an extraordinary coherence as one."
