ADMISSION: Admission varies by individual program
Join us for a series of programs to mark the final phase of community and artist activation for Cara Levine: To Survive I Need You To Survive. The week will include a combination of public programs and private events centered around the artwork Carve; The Mystic is Nourished From This Sphere—a collaborative artwork between the artist and the public—and will engage themes of grief, healing, community, and interconnectedness. Programs will be led by a diverse range of participants throughout the week including the artists Heidi Quante and Alicia Scott of the Bureau of Linguistical Reality, spiritual community leader Maggid Jhos Singer, artist and sound artist Clare Hedin, and more.
During each of the seven days of the series, Levine will also be present in the gallery carving notes contributed by visitors into the surface of Carve; The Mystic is Nourished From This Sphere. The week will culminate in a public event at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, where all are invited to join Levine in digging a hole for collective grief and celebrating the close of this week-long community effort.

Carve; The Mystic is Nourished From This Sphere is a site-specific artwork at The CJM on view in the exhibition Cara Levine: To Survive I Need You to Survive. An extension of Levine's project DIG: A Hole to Put Your Grief In, Carve offers a vessel made to contain grief, offer a site for ritual, and hold space for reflection. The artwork invites visitors to contribute notes about grief they may be experiencing in their own lives, which Levine then engraves the grief notes into the surface of the artwork. As the carvings accumulate, the artwork increasingly represents the strength and compassion that come with the understanding that no one is truly alone in their grief.
Cara Levine: To Survive I Need You to Survive explores loss, empathy, and equity through sculpture, video, and socially engaged practices. Grappling with some of the most pressing issues of our time, including police brutality, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the California-based artist uses her artistic practice as a means to explore and process grief around personal and collective traumas. The resulting works highlight how creative endeavors can facilitate healing and help mourners find meaning in community with one another. Drawing on Jewish traditions, community practice, and interconnectedness, the exhibition invites visitors to explore installations and sculptural works that plumb the depths of the intimate and universal experiences of grief and regeneration.
This weeklong series is presented in partnership with the Bureau of Linguistical Reality, Maggid Jhos Singer, At the Well, Clare Hedin, Case for Making, NIAD Art Center, and Ned Burskirk and You're Going to Die.
