David K. Freeman is a musician and teaching artist based in Orange, NJ. He has traveled extensively to study music, including in the Dominican Republic and India, and his work is infused with a passion for jazz, latin, and folk music traditions. Freeman is a co-founding member of several musical groups, including the Outer Bridge Ensemble, Sha’ar, and The Biryani Boys. He also collaborates on projects in the visual arts, dance, and film, including composing and performing original music with notable artists including Mike Myers (SNL), Alan Cummings, Douglas Keeve, Jimmy Buffett, Billy Martin (MMW), Annie Lanzillotto, James Zollar, Daniel Carter, Fast Forward, Brent Green, Paul Rucker, Stephen Chopek, Nadine LaFond, Alicia Jo Rabins, Daniel Saks, Wyndham Boylan-Garnett, Lilah Larson, and others. As a band leader, Freeman is currently celebrating his latest album Overview Effect. Freeman holds a Master of Arts in Education and Human Development from The George Washington University with a focus on experiential education, museum education, and Jewish cultural arts. He is a recipient of the Tides Foundation Special Project Grant (2018), Jim Joseph Fellowship (2016), Schusterman/ROI Micro Grant (2016), Asylum Arts Grant (2014) Jubilation Foundation Fellowship (2013), Geraldine R. Dodge Fellowship, and the NJSCA Folk Arts Apprenticeship Award. As a Teaching Artist, Freeman has worked to found and co-found organizations to ensure that musical education is available to all.
