EXHIBITIONS ASSISTANT
POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the dual direction of the Registrar and Exhibitions Manager, and the Chief Preparator and Exhibition Designer, this position is responsible for ensuring the safe handling and storage of art work; coordinating the various aspects of borrowing and lending objects under The Contemporary Jewish Museum’s (The CJM) domain; assisting with scheduling and overseeing delivery, preparation, installation, and dispersal of art objects; maintaining inventories and documentation of objects related to temporary and loaned exhibitions; and assisting with daily operation and maintenance of the exhibitions. The Exhibitions Assistant will participate in various departmental activities including weekly departmental meeting and other meetings as necessary.

Status: Regular, Non-Exempt, Full Time

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with arrangements for temporary exhibitions, both borrowed and organized by The CJM, including but not limited to logistics and installation.
  • Assume responsibility for the daily operation and maintenance of exhibitions and installations at The CJM as scheduled, including acting as point person for exhibitions-related issues during their shift.
  • Perform maintenance and upkeep of work areas, keep up-to-date inventories of equipment and supplies, and notify team of restocking and/or new purchase needs.
  • Perform routine checks and maintenance of exhibitions, including running A/V equipment, cleaning, light replacement, paint touch-up, etc.
  • Maintain departmental records on loans and installation procedures and generate checklists, receipts, documentation, and correspondence as needed.
  • Coordinate safe packing, shipping, and handling of artwork using accepted museum standards.
  • Inspect incoming and outgoing loaned works for exhibitions, generating Condition Reports.
  • Assist with technical research related to the production of artwork or other exhibition materials.
  • Liaise as needed with artists and designers during planning and installation of their artwork.
  • Assist the Registrar and Exhibitions Manager on occasional travel to borrowing institutions to oversee unpacking, installation, condition reports, and/or repacking for travelling exhibitions organized by The CJM.
  • Perform other exhibition related duties as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate required, Advanced Degree preferred, with course work in Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Conservation, or closely related field.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in art handling in an art museum environment, and demonstrated understanding of museum best practices.
  • Technical expertise in at least one of the following: registration methods, fabrication, audiovisual.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience with art handling, including installation, crating, packing, storage, and transportation of works in a variety of media.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with particular attention to detail and record keeping.
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to identify problems and conduct effective problem resolution. 
  • Ability to follow instructions and to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with wide variety of materials, tools, and technologies used in a museum setting.
  • Familiarity with Mac and PC environments.
  • Familiarity with registration methods, collections databases, and preventive care is desirable.
  • Technical expertise in casework fabrication and finishing is desirable.
  • Technical expertise in audiovisual installation and troubleshooting is desirable.
Other Requirements
  • Manual dexterity, visual, and hearing acuity.
  • Ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time, and to do intermittent physical activity such as walking, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
